We take care of the land...it takes care of us.

We're just a couple of country dwellers......

that love nature, hunting, fishing, gardening, campfires, crafting, cooking, canning, laughter and living!!

Ya just never know what I'll blog about next...

So visit us often!

Road Closed

High waters are making
travel conditions a little sketchy
around these parts ...

Thank goodness
for road crews
watching over the situation...

SLOW down and
proceed with CAUTION if
you see their
bright yellow
construction hats!

Have a safe
and happy ride!

Lilacs and Mosaics

Happy Weekend Friends!

Hope you are
surrounded with picnic food
and family this holiday weekend...

Our visit from the kids was last week,
so we are enjoying a quiet weekend
and lots of asparagus!!!

It's been 60 and cloudy, but
we are relaxed and enjoying
a couple days off!

My lilacs are opening
and I'm thinking about
moving my bed out under
the bush!

or just gathering
some bouquets to
enjoy in the house ~
probably a better idea!

(Since the chickens also
love to hang out under
the lilac bush)...

I wish they would bloom
all summer long...

I guess I'll have to refer
back to this post after
they're gone :(

Just a reminder:
take time to stop
and smell the lilacs!!

Happy Mosaic Monday, Friends!

Asparagus Hunting

As far as the Sall's are concerned
South Dakota has two
hunting seasons
(well, okay 3)...

Duck
Pheasant
and
Asparagus

Unlike pheasant hunting, asparagus
has not become a big source of revenue YET!
The locals are still smart enough
to keep this little-known wild commodity
under their hats!

So don't look for any
big signs pointing to it!

And if you ask anyone local
where to find it...
they'll give you the "HUHHH?? what asparagus???" response

It's a season that
comes and goes
and hardly anyone
talks about it out loud!

Wild asparagus grows in the ditches...
it's better than any asparagus
you can buy in any market
for no less than $5 for a small bundle.

But, if you want to go
find your own (FREE)...
you better have a real good eye
and a tolerance for ticks!

Sall can spot it from the road...
and Max loves to follow along.

and yes, we spend the
rest of the evening looking for ticks!
ICK!

I prefer to stay in the truck
and spot things to photo!
Like old farm buildings,
birds, flowers, what not...

I leave the asparagus
to the serious picker hunter!

I usually end up standing on top
of them and complaining
about not finding any!!

We started growing it in our
garden too,
but the wild stuff always
tastes better!
So every evening Sall goes out
on his "shhh" asparagus run
and brings back enough
for supper!

There are some
un-written
laws in the
asparagus underground network:

1. Don't ask and Don't tell
2.  Share the Bounty and refer to rule #1
3.  Never pick more than you need
4. Always leave some for seed

There is no hot-line for reporting poachers
but, maybe there should be?

Some guys should just
stick to fishing!

Hope you're out
doing something fun for the weekend!

Country-Girl Stuff

Contrary to what this photo shows....
there was no grass growing under my feet yesterday!!
The sun was out,
there was a light breeze,
and no rain drops were falling from the sky!

I trimmed grass,
I pulled weeds,
I mowed grass,
I raked grass,
I trimmed trees,
I hauled trash,
and then...
I was too exhausted to take
pictures of my accomplishments...
so today I'm
sharing a photo of
my tired feet
in my tired old work boots!

It was a good day
on the Sall Farm!

Hope all my followers
are enjoying some productive
warm weather days too!

A Great May Day

Our lilacs are being a little
apprehensive!
They know very well we
could still get a late frost.

Knock, Knock!!
I guess they're out playing
in the sunshine too.

Just don't disturb Lucy!
She needs her beauty rest.

What a gorgeous day we're having!
Anyone want to come over and play?
Hugs,
Lisa

You Are My Sunshine

The storm clouds are
giving us a break today...

The sun is shining again!

My mower and trimmer
are waiting for me...

I'll be working around the yard today!

humming a happy tune...
(you make me happy ~
when skies are grey...)

(you'll never know dear ~
how much I love you...)

Please don't take my sunshine away.

Are you singing too?
Later,
Lisa

My Inner Tinman

this dreary weather is
dampening my spirit....

and rusting my soul...

Sunshine is a gift we should not
take for granted.

Keeping a can of grease handy...
Hope your world is sunny today!!
Love,
Lisa.

Rapture Report

I'm happy to report
we survived the rapture!
However, the skies were looking
pretty ominous at 5:00.
A little rain storm passed through...
and Sall's Country Life
lives on!

See you tomorrow.

Asparagus Season

A hazy ~ misty kind of Friday...

Everything is just waiting
for the sun to pop out...

or just chillin' waiting for
a bunny to pop out!

Sall and the gang
have been going
out on the asparagus run

Asparagus hunting
is fun when you have
helpers!

The more eyes you have,
the more asparagus
you see!

It's especially nice
to have helpers
that can cook fabulous
meals like this too!!

We've been eating good
and enjoying some great company...
What a treat it is
when the kids come to visit!

Have a delicious weekend, friends!
