From The Cowgirl Within

I would love to have a horse....

they remind me (a little) of Golden Retrievers,

so attentive and obedient....

the relationship between a cowboy and his horse
is filled with respect and gratitude....

that is a great reason to have a horse,

my horse would be called L.J.

after the one my brother had in his teens....

L.J. headed right for the clothesline
when my father put me on his back!

I was maybe 7 or 8 years old,

my Dad felt terrible,
luckily I was able to get up and brush myself off....

I guess that horse never appreciated my cowboy spirit

and I certainly didn't show any gratitude for the
clothesline mark left on my neck!!

I forgave that horse the minute
I got up!
and
I still love horses.

I'm sharing with Nancy and Lisa
wow, did this week fly by or what?

Tune in tomorrow and bring
something fresh for

Farm Fresh Friday FOUR

Welcome to Farm Fresh Friday
(#4...F.F.F.F.)

This week on the prairie...

The good news is:
we got those thievin' chickens
under control - my lettuce has been saved!

The bad news is:
those gawkers from across the road
enticed our poor Max into
coming over for something fresh to eat!!
Now, I'm not going into details, but the
poor dog must've been pretty tired
of his regular "Fit and Trim" dog food
to want to go over and eat
what they laid out for him!!
Uggghhhh,
poor Max has been running
for the dumping grounds 3 times faster...
And naturally we didn't know he was sick
until he spread evidence all over my kitchen floor!
Poor Max!
Needless to say we don't have any good words
for the nosy, medalling neighbors!
And hopefully, Max has learned his lesson.

So, in an attempt to get that whole
sight out of your minds
I'll leave you with some wild roses...
their fresh fragrance has been my
savior and joy this week!

Nosy Neighbors

We have the gawkers - from across the road....

(I think one is Mrs. Kravitz with night cream still on her face)

Then we have the gossipy Swallow Sisters...

(they don't miss a thing, swooping around the farm all day long)

I'm pretty sure they have their own still inside the barn,
because the traffic behind the barn is pretty steady
especially at sundown!

You can't step anywhere around here,
without somebody in your business....

Oh well, privacy is over-rated anyway!!

Farm Fresh Friday

Welcome to Farm Fresh Friday
(#3, if anybody's counting)

We are so happy you dropped by...

and excited to share something new and fresh with you!!

~~~~~~~
This week on the prairie...
 I'm Up In ARMS!
not only has work taken me off our farm
but, while I'm away there's been some
shenigans going on...
LOOK at them, all innocent looking now...
But, don't let their innocent beady eyes fool you!
They're all lettuce eatin' thieves!
With both of us away at work all day,
it seems these little rascals think they
can help themselves to fresh lettuce salad!
Well, some drastic measures have been taken....
How do you like chicken wire, Sully?
If that doesn't keep'em out of my lettuce,
there will be some bars installed on the chicken coop windows!
I hate to sentence them to solitary confinement,
but what else do ya do with law breakin' chickens??
~~~~~~~

It doesn't matter if you live on a farm, a suburb, a colony,
a condo,an apartment, a motel, an igloo, or a closet...
we all have access to freshness!!

Local Markets are popping up everywhere
and are getting more popular all the time...

Face it, everybody gets excited
over FRESH!!

Fresh Vegetables, Fresh Flowers,
Fresh Coffee!!

You name it....
Fresh smells better, tastes better, and IS BETTER!!

Farm Fresh Friday will be here weekly from May through September.

A place to share all things homemade and home-grown.
There is no rule that it has to be made by you or grown by you,
just the fact that it was hand made or grown by somebody

Support your local farmer's market
and/or
Show off your kohlrabies
be proud of your zinnias...
bring us your needlework,
air out your dirty laundry
(well, be careful with that one!)

  Bring it to Farm Fresh Friday...

Summertime is near
let's take in all the freshness we can!!

And while you're at it, grab our button
and share it with your friends....

Barn Charm Circa 1950

My little trip down memory lane this weekend
has put me in a 1950's frame of mind....

so in keeping with the theme,
I've turned this barn photo
(taken on Saturday)
into something that would
fit into my mother's old photo albums....

I wonder if there are any
re-runs of "Mr. Ed"
on t.v. tonight?

Have a great week,
and go get ya some
Barn Charm.....Here!

I'm off to paint a house,
I'll be back when the job is finished
or Friday whichever comes first!

Have some fun for me,

Visiting Grandpa

It's May 14th and the local greenhouses are
full of blooming annuals and perennials....
 customers are flocking in...
gardening season is here and it's time to get growing!!

I have not bought any plants yet!
This week promises to be warm,
so by the end of the week my petunias
will be planted!!

Oh how I would love to get in a time machine
and venture back to about 1950...

I would definitely buy my plants
from Pete Javers
(my grandpa)

My mother always tells
me about her mother's cold frame...
Grandma would just scoop a handful of pansies
out and put them in the customer's box!

Pete and Eileen had the Lennox Greenhouse
and the best plants in Minnehaha County!

Grandpa Pete was a carpenter by trade
and made his own wooden crates
for flower trays

The flower shop smelled of chrysanthemums,
lily of the valley, gladiolus, roses, and orchids....

Grandma and the girls were always busy
arranging flowers for funerals and weddings!

My mom can still make the most beautiful bows,
she had a lot of practice!!

My brothers and sisters all remember riding their
bikes to Grandpas (just down the street)
about every day.

After Grandma died I think the 4 kids were
great company for Grandpa

He had an apartment built on to the house we lived in,
he must've been very lonely to put up with 4 lively ones!!

Our house on Main and Elm 1950

This Saturday I strolled down our street
(and Memory Lane)
and took some pictures...

Our old house 2012

Barb & Rhonda in front of Grandpa's Apartment 1968

The apartment now (2012)
Someone's added on a garage
(which means Grandpa's fishpond is long gone)
but,the gas lamp is still there
AND
the J on the storm door!!

38 years ago I had to show Grandpa Pete how I could
ride a bike, I rode up and down the sidewalk on visits!

Saturday I walked up this sidewalk and
wondered,
"Where does the time go?"

Thanks for strolling down Memory Lane with me.
A visit to my birthplace always brings
out my sentimental side and the old photo albums!

I hope this stirs up a good memory or two for you...

"So long as the memory of certain beloved friends
lives in my heart,
I shall say that life is good."

The Flower Ladies

Saturday was a special birthday!

My Mom's sister turned 90....

My cousins gave her a very nice party,
and they all came to celebrate her
milestone 90th!!

there was sandwiches, salads, cake and punch, even
popcorn and licorice!

Which these two fought over the whole time....

The oldest and the youngest playing like two little girls,
hiding their cake and pushing their popcorn around!
(It was too comical...I hope I'm still kidding around when I'm 94!!)

94  +  90  +  81  =  265

My oldest Aunt had me do the math,
and we all added it up in our heads...

265 years, the three girls were all speechless...

I don't think they ever imagined themselves here!!

Don't you always stay the same age in your own mind?

I think these girls will forever be the young flowershop ladies of Lennox....

And that's just fine by me,
because they'll always be the young ladies
that I adore and admire!

Happy Birthday, Aunt Janet!
and may you and your sisters celebrate
many many more birthdays!!

(p.s. I have more pictures from our trip that I'll post later today)
