Fresh and Sweet
Mmmmm...
Grab your salt shaker and a stick of butter
and
get ready!!!!
It's sweet corn season
in the Midwest!
We ventured over to our buddy Brian's
farm to load up on some of
the best sweet corn in the area!
We like to freeze it
and have enough to last
the whole year!
First we shuck it,
then load it into our turkey cooker!
It's the biggest pot we have
and cooking outside
saves on heating up the house
when it's 85 degrees outside!
A quick boil (3 to 4 minutes)
then into the kitchen sink
full of cold water and ice.
After it's blanched
I cut off the kernels with my electric knife...
no picture of this action
because by now my hands
are covered with sticky corn
(along with my shirt, my hair and the kitchen floor)
Now the corn goes into a mixing pot
where we add some sugar
(it depends on how sweet the corn is
as to how much sugar to add)
That's it!
We put two cups in a quart size freezer bag...
just enough for a meal for the two of us.
Stack'em in a cake pan and stick'em in the freezer.
(after they are frozen, you can separate and stack'em anyway you like)
In the middle of winter, this is the next best thing
to corn on the cob!!
Mmmmmm,
don't you love summer picnics...
hamburgers, hotdogs,
baked beans
and
corn on the cob!!!
Just remember
to seat Aunt Marge across from the little kids!
(they won't mind)
Have a dandy weekend friends!

State Fair Bound
Last weekend was our counties 4-H achievement days...
many of our "little" neighborhood friends are just
getting their feet wet in the whole agriculture show production...
I was not raised on a farm to be part of it all,
so I decided to take the camera to the show barn
and see what goes on...
Much to my amazement,
things were hopping!!
Horse trailers and pickups everywhere, it took me awhile to find a parking spot!
Then it was-watch your step on the way to the barn,
pooo everywhere!!
Farm animals all over the place...
tied on leashes, penned up,
traveling corrals set up with animals just
waiting to take their turn in the show ring...
The Sinkies were busy getting their cattle
in pristine condition...
hair dryers, clippers, hair spray, fans
good grief, Matt has a regular bovine beauty beautique on wheels!!
Dad (Matt) is teaching all of his girls the art behind showing cattle.
I can see it takes a lot of patience and a true perfectionist is the likely prize winner!
Inside....
A gentleman was rattling off tips and how-tos and what-nots
over a loud speaker...
there was one of our little friends along with 4 other kids her age
all holding onto a sheep.
Some were struggling to keep it still, some had a firm grip
around it's neck making it stand just the way they wanted...
They walked around in a circle,
then the gentleman with the loudspeaker
announced a winner and a runner-up.
All of the girls were super cute in their jeans
and 4-H tee shirts...
proudly showing off their animals
to me and the judges...
I'd like to be one of those judges...
Do they have a ribbon for the cutest?
I better have a lot of those!!!
See you at the fair girls,
and GOOD LUCK!!

I can't believe it's almost Fair time!!
Where's the summer gone?
Blue ribbon hugs,

Whatever Floats Your Boat
Not too many vehicles come down our lonely road...
the mail lady...
the fuel truck...
and the grain trucks (during harvest)
and,
every other Tuesday
our favorite...
the ice cream truck!!
It is such a welcome
sight in the heat of the summer!
Definitely something to crow about...
there is something about
a root beer float on a hot summer day
that just makes my heart sing!!!
Cheers!
and
Have a happy Tuesday!

Vintage For Sale
Vintage For SALE
Remember that old rockin' chair?
Well, I've gathered up more "Vintage" stuff
for a booth at the Farmer's Market
TOMORROW!
When I agreed to baby sit 3 days this week
I figured "NO Problem, I'll have it all ready by then!"
NOT!!!!!!
Today was down to the wire-
you're not even close to being ready-
what were you thinking- day!
I started at 6 a.m.
here it is 6:30 p.m.
and I have the van loaded and
just a few little details
to finish up!
PHEWWWWW!!!!
Posters have been up around town
all week, so I'm hoping plenty of
and BUY...
and I'm not just
twiddling my thumbs,
sittin' in that rocking chair by myself!!!
this is another of my finished furniture pieces....
night stands like this
are so fun...
the possibilities are endless
and I hope I can find
more to redo!
I've done some Uppercase Living projects too....
some were right out of the catalog (easy, peasy)
and others are my own creations
with old barn wood and paint!
Do you recognize water boy?
Sorry no time for a better picture now...
he got a bronzed finish and looks amazing
(if I do say so myself)
the girl is still in the shed waiting for her new look.
Here is a canvas I had a lot of fun with...
You probably recognize some of the photos
from our blog! I printed them and decoupaged them
on canvas, painted a border and added a quote!
I'd like to do this more on a custom order basis.
Oh, and see the bright red framed chalkboard?
That used to be a mirror with an ugly brown frame...
red paint, and chalk board paint and
now it might have to hang in my kitchen!
More fun vintage stuff we've enjoyed collecting....
I picked a bunch of cat tails and sprayed them for bouquets...
Fill up your shopping cart
with awesome vintage items
from Sall's Country Life....
See you in the park
tomorrow morning!
(wish me luck!)
This Week's Busyness
It's wheat harvest time here in South Dakota...
The farm family that I baby-sit for
needed a sitter for their 4 "wild ones" this week,
so off I went!
Three days with the kids
while Mom is at a convention
and Dad is harvesting in the fields....
They kept me hopping
every minute (as usual)!
I think it would be easier
herding nine little baby pheasants,
than it is to keep all 4 of these rascals
happy at one time....
Melt downs happen quite frequently around here,
but we did manage to have lots
of fun in between the meltdowns!
his parents and now
the baby-sitter too,
is exhausted!
When I wasn't with the kids this week,
I was busy getting ready for a sale!
Stay tuned for some pics of my projects....
