Rooster!

If you travel across South Dakota
right now you'll see the
same sign everywhere...

"WELCOME HUNTERS!"

With an economic boost
of $25 Billion dollars in sales
the red carpet has been rolled out
to welcome hunters from everywhere!

Yesterday was opening day
and the pheasant hunters
gathered and hunted...

I had the pleasure of walking
and hunting along side
a group of investment bankers
from all over the U.S.

I took pictures for them
and put together
a slideshow CD
as a souvenir
of their South Dakota
Hunting Adventure...

Unlike today's windy and cold weather,
yesterday was the perfect day
for hunting...

Nice and sunny...

just enough clouds in the sky
to make the pictures perfect!

these hunters
were getting a glimpse
of how lucky we
are to live in South Dakota...

after 4 hours of marching through
corn strips on a professional hunt,
I went over to our local hunt
and walked along with them...

the same beautiful scenery...

row after row of bird feed
and cover...

we walked in some pretty big
fields...

too big for the amount
of hunters in our local group

I think we were just chasing
animals around,
or maybe
they were
just chasing us around?

see the deer looking at me
in this shot...

here's a closer look...

he was running up ahead of
me giving all the
pheasants the heads
up that hunters
are coming!

I made it over and around
and at the bottom was
this quagmire of brush...

I thought I was just gonna
have to give up and live with
the deer here!

Seriously by this point
my legs and feet were so tired,
I was ready to call a helicopter
to lift me out of there!

My boots wouldn't stay tied,
the weeds kept catching them,
It felt like walking in quick sand!
Every step the tall bent over stalks
would grab my feet and hold them!

the guys were all way ahead of me,

who's dumb idea was this anyway?

from there it turned into a jungle
of 10 foot tall sorghum and pure mud...

I struggled all the way back to the road!

When I got in the truck I told Sall
I'm going home!

Seven hours of hunting was plenty...

then I spent the next 7 hours
editing 400 photos.

By 2:00 today I had all of
my souvenir CD's ready to deliver...

All of the hunters loved the pictures!

Thank Goodness,
maybe I can buy
a massage session
with my earnings!

Take care and
don't get taken down
by monster weeds,
Lisa

OUCH!

I did it!

I finally "manned up"
and kept my
appointment at the
Dentist Office...

Ughhh,

this tooth had to go...

I wasn't about
to fork over $2400.00
for a root canal
to save a molar...

so out it went...

My dentist told me
teeth will pop out easily
of older people,
especially those that smoke!

found this fitting photo on the internet at: http://fineartamerica.com/featured/sea-otter-with-a-toothache-max-allen.html

After approximately
2 hours of tugging
and twisting...
then finally grinding
it into little pieces,
I was regretting both my youth
and my good habits!!

Hope you are enjoying
your Saturday!
Hugs and Moans,
Lisa
P.S.Have you flossed today?

I'm Seeing RED

 Happy Fall!

 One more round of
tomato juice today...

this is it...

the last of them...

today...

I hope!

the end of canning season
is a good reason to go off the wagon
on a Monday afternoon!

The Bloody Mary's
will be ready
before the last jar pops!

Let the party begin,

Where Has the Month Gone?

As I hang my head with shame
I can not believe
it's been a month
since I last did a blog post!!

Fill up your cup and let's
just review what's been happening
in Sall's Country Life...
(I hope you like the circus,
cause that's what it feels like most days!)

Oh and yes...
we even went to the real one
in Kansas City!!

The grand kids all got to spend
a day with Grandpa and Grandma Sall...
short of $20.00 refreshments,
they can get that kind of
entertainment at the farm
any time they want,
but the Barnam &Bailey show was quite spectacular!!

We got our son's family moved
out of New York and
into Iowa!
We were dumb lucky enough to
be in Iowa City to help unload
box after heavy box, finagle huge art work
into small spaces, and sweat like pigs
carrying it all from 2 lots down the street
(as the moving truck was too big
to park beside their house!)
UGH!
This old lady found out she is out of SHAPE!!

Back at the farm....

the tomato and pepper harvest
kept me busy!

Salsa,
Tomato Juice,
Sweet Relish,
Hot Relish,
Canned Tomatoes...
my kitchen has
been "SMOKIN HOT"!

This will be the last week
for tomatoes,
frost is expected this weekend...
thank goodness!

It's time to get out
of the kitchen and back
in to my crafty room!

In between canning
I managed to get a few memory blocks done...
a few orders have been filled...

this was a fun one
for a sports lovin' Freshman Girl...

Sall Construction has
been busy building a house
for a good friend of ours...
the project started in mid July
and kept me running since then...

Just a simple, no frills kind of house

But, being the contractor's wife,
the painter, the stainer,
the decorator, the shopper,
the book-keeper,
and the inspector...
well, let's just say I'm swamped!

Back and forth from the building site
to my kitchen...

Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron
for everything from paint
to furniture...

Do you know it's been 28 years since I shopped
for a couch?

Boy, did I get a bad case of sticker shock!!

Three trips and 5 furniture stores later,
we picked out a couch, 2 chairs, end tables
and a desk!
Furniture arrives tomorrow,
I hope Farmer C. likes his new
furniture as well as he likes his new house?

Things are wrapping up at the job site...

wrapping up in the garden...

Fall is upon us!!

Time to start thinking about winterizing
around here....

One thing I love about winter,
 it's a little slower pace...
and more time for
layin' around!!

Well, now I'm caught up!
Time to go work on some curtains,
and deliver
a belated birthday present
to my sister!
I owe her a blog post too!
Stay tuned for that!

Thanks for stopping by!
Have a happy day.

Oh Brother

When the good Lord
was handing out brothers,
he knew I would
need some good ones...
and
he sent me the best!

Yesterday was
older brother's
birthday...

this was him
60 birthday's ago!

We could just put
a "6" in front of that "1" candle
and he'd look pretty much
the same as in the picture!
(well, kinda)

He's been spending
his holiday weekend birthday
with brother #2...

The two of them don't
fight over bikes and train sets anymore...

now they just get together
and talk campers!!

Please,
Somebody tell them
the world does not keep score
for the size of your 5th wheel!!

Love ya, Bro's!!

Pass The Chips Please!

How do you like your salsa?

mild

medium

or

Hot??

We like ours
just on the spicy side...

somewhere
in between medium and Hot...

I now have the recipe
calibrated to perfection...

and I will be spending
the next couple of weeks
weighing jalapenos
and peeling tomatoes....

If you think I've gone m.i.a.,
I'm only stuck in a steamy kitchen
making enough salsa to last us
another year....

How about you,
are you doing any canning?
Is your garden harvest
overwhelming you?

Keep on chopping!
Hugs,
Lisa

Pickles and Petunias: 1938

Today I'm sharing a post from our sister blog, Pickles and Petunias.
It's all about chickens...
and we all love chickens, Right?

Since we just lost one of our little hens,
I'll dedicate this one to little Whitey ( or should I say old Whitey)
she never got in any of my pictures...
she was always the shy and slow one because of a bad foot.

We think the foot problem finally took her
(so sad, I know)

R.I.P. Whitey

and now we're down to 3...
Sully, Miss Red Hen, and Blackey

Pickles and Petunias: 1938: Lisa... I refer to her as the pickles of this blog, is the sister lucky enough to raise a few chickens on her farm.  (and one very... Read more at Pickles and Petunias.

The Farmer In the Dell

I don't know about
your neck of the woods,
but here in South Dakota
the farmers
are busy
harvesting wheat...

  here on
the Sall Farm
this country girl
is busy canning
whatever Mr. Sall
brings in to  her kitchen!!

My kitchen sink might be
full of cucumbers one day
and hungarian hot wax peppers
the next...

The summer's been good
to us this year...
the garden has produced
bushels and bushels
of cucumbers, onions, garlics...
potatoes, dill, peppers...

I'll be ramping up
the tomato juice and salsa
production any day now!

 I only wish the days
could be longer
so
I could enjoy
it all more!

 Being stuck in the kitchen
all day scrubbing pickles
was starting to get old...

 Chopping tomatoes and peppers
will be a nice change of scenery for me!

 as long as I'm
able to break free
once in awhile to
enjoy some wild flowers
I'm good as gold!!

If this post makes
you want to break away...

come on out
to the country!

just tell our
gate keeper
you'd like a tour
of the garden.

He doesn't accept tips,
just belly rubs!

See you soon!

Have a Happy Day!

Lisa.
