Pickling Beets

The Garden Harvest
continues...

Beets Today...

Another day of canning here!

I'm still using Grandma's beet slicer...

it's the only way to cut
a nice beet pickle!

Grandma's slicer...
Grandma's recipe...

I hope she knows how much
I'm missing her today!

She could be teaching me German
while I'm slicing wavy beets...

Aaahhckkk to Lieber!!

(I don't know what
that meant but she said it a lot)

Maybe it meant "get busy!"
(in my case, yes, that's probably
what she was sayin')

Hugs,
Lisa

my mother was full-blood german and said ach du lieber all the time, too. she translated it as 'oh my dear' or 'oh my gosh'. :)

and i detest beets. ate too many as a kid and won't touch them, now. :)

Lisa, It meant "Ach my Gawd, you children are driving me crazy!"
And the crazier we drove her the more German would fly, which made us giggle uncontrollably.

At summer's end . . . I look forward to a photo of ALL of your canned fruits/vegetables. Family members are no doubt thrilled with the anticipation on their palette!

I love your "old school" ways . . .

I read some where that Aaahhckkk to Lieber! meant dear love ! I guess it depends on how it is said and written in German but what do I know I am of Brit decent lol ! Have a great day !

Those are some dandy beets! Your garden is doing very well!
I love beet pickles and used to make them all the time when I lived on the farm. Haven't made them in years. But looking at yours are making me hungry for them!
