Road Trippin' With Tatanka
Saturday, Sall and I enjoyed a relaxing
drive through Custer State Park.
The sun was peeking through
thin clouds
and we were definitely loving the
70 degree temperature
we haven't seen for a long time!
I told you today we would roam with the buffalo...
so sit back and enjoy the ride
and
humm along...
Oh, give me a home...
Our first sighting of the Buffalo herd in the park
was off at a long distance
I was really starting to feel disappointed,
I don't have a high powered lens -
and I'm certainly not hiking out to them!!
a few more curves and hills,
and much to my delight
we could get
up close and personal!
Every inch of the park is spectacular scenery!
Dense forest of pine and cedars...
around the bend and
your on rolling prairie.
Today they were busy munching
on grass, they wouldn't even look up at us,
they just kept munching!
The herd at Custer State Park is one of the largest publically-owned herds in the world at 1,300 head.
Bison can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. Historically, the animal played an essential role in the lives of the Lakota (Sioux), who relied on the "tatanka" for food, clothing and shelter.
Besides bison, the park is home to wildlife such as pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, wild turkeys, and a band of friendly burros.
Custer State Park has an annual Buffalo Roundup
the 46th Annual Buffalo Roundup will be Monday Sept. 26, 2011
about 10,000-15,000 people attend the Roundup every year.
For a real "Dances With Wolves" experience,
come and see for yourself - no reservations needed -
Just bring your camera!

We'll meet you back here tomorrow for
a Hee-Haw Good time!
